Gluten Free Halls of Fame and Shame

Welcome to the Gluten Free Halls of Fame and Shame, which we'll shorten to GF Halls I think. To quote the advertisement each one "does what it says on the tin". We hope that this will become a useful reference as it will contain entries from our travels around the UK.

In the Gluten Free Hall of Fame is a select band of restaurants, pubs, etc. have given impeccable service in providing Gluten Free provender. But more importantly than that, have done so without making a fuss or commotion, thereby avoiding the embarrassment of the attention of others.

So you can easily imagine who has made it into our Gluten Free Hall of Shame! Those places that can't, or more often than not won't, provide a reasonable choice of GF items on their menu. Worse still is they are places where the staff seem to delight in making Lynne the problem, rather than treating her as a valued customer with a particular dietary need to cater for. As Lynne often says:
"Welcome to the UK where the customer is always wrong, and you are guaranteed service with a snarl!".

Which could get us onto a long-winded rant about the catering industry. First off, who do these restrateur people think is catering for whom? To cater is defined as "to provide food and services" but since when has this included "you can have that without the...". This approach Lynne calls: "Catering by omission." And boy is it. What really galls me is that they still want to charge you full price for less than a full meal!

Then we get onto caterers. They think that as they are unlikely to meet Lynne because, to quote the Wikipedia "catering is to provice food at a remote site" its okay to take "catering by omission" to the reductionist extreme. The worst examples being:

Then I could go on and on about the... But I won't, at least not for now. When I'm fired up enough I'll come pack and add some more to this tirade. Ending on a positive note though; the entries in the Hall of Fame are there because they are good and well worth a visit if you are Gluten Intolerant but still like to eat out.
